"The impulse to heal is real and powerful and lies within the client. Our {therapist} job is to evoke that healing power, to meet its tests and needs and to support it in its expression and development. We {therapist} are not the healers. We {therapist} are the context in which healing is inspired." - Ron Kurtz This quote comes from my training this weekend. I love this quote and it really rings true for me as a Therapist, because many of my clients think that I have the magic potion to fix or heal them and that it will be a quick and easy process. However, while I wish I could offer a quick and easy solution, the “fix” and healing often has to come from within you and requires a journey that is not always easy. My role is to be there to help facilitate and support you as you navigate that journey as well as to provide the context and environment of safety, validation, and understanding.
If you didn’t have a chance to engage with me on social media this weekend, where I shared a little about this training, let me fill you in. As you know, my heart is in working with trauma and that is where I specialize, and more specifically with Sexual Trauma. I am trained in EMDR (both drawing protocol and eye movements), but I wanted more. EMDR is amazing in helping the brain process trauma, but I needed something that would take my clients one step further, because trauma also gets “stuck” in the body. Therefore, I wanted a tool to offer my clients who have experienced trauma and needed a way to further flush the trauma out of their system. This training is PERFECT for that. It is a therapy called Sensorimotor. This therapy uses Mindfulness to bring awareness to the body, which allows it to speak for itself and noticing where it experiences the trauma. Once it has experienced it, this process allows you to notice how your body might express that trauma and therefore release it in the way it feels necessary. This might sound a little odd to you, but this therapy truly allows you to create a relationship with your body and trust what it tells you. Maybe this sounds uncomfortable to you, and thats okay. There is a process all within itself to create this relationship with your body and start to be able to trust it. We as a society tend to process the world cognitively and often neglect our bodies and what it is telling us, because we don't see it as a reliable source. Maybe your body feels unsafe to you because that is where you experienced the trauma. Absolutely, this feeling is valid. However, this doesn't have to be the way you feel about your body forever. One thing I love about this therapy is that it looks different for everyone, so it truly is a unique and individual experience and it blows my mind how powerful it truly is. In transparency, I experienced it for myself and it brought to my awareness things in my body that I may not have processed and is something that I am processing in my own therapy. Yes, I do see my own therapist. After all, it is important to me to be able to practice what I preach. I share this with you, because it is important to me that you know my human-ness. I do not have everything figured out and that is the beauty of the therapy process. We all can continue to grow if we allow ourselves. I choose to be genuine and transparent with you, because that is a practice that I believe creates deeper and more genuine connection, which is a vital part of the therapeutic relationship that we have. This training is many weekends throughout the year and I cannot wait to continue to grow and be able to offer you more resources to better allow you to bring hope to your future - which if I haven’t shared with you, this is my motto for my practice. “Helping people establish hope for their future.” Because lets get real, somedays can feel bleak. I love living life with you and I cannot wait to tell you more as I continue to progress through this training. But for now, we will start with the basics and what I learned this weekend! If you want to hear more about this therapy and how I would integrate this into your therapy process, I am happy to talk to you more about it! If you think this is something that you would love to do, lets set up an appointment for you!
