SENSORIMOTOR PSYCHOTHERAPY

Picture
Obtained from the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute
We often process this world cognitively and neglect the physiological responses that we have. Our body gives us messages that can often be ignored and a few different reasons for this are: 1. Your body doesn't feel like a safe place to exist, 2. You don't know how to connect and feel what is happening in your body, or 3. Your body betrayed you and you feel it is safest to not acknowledge the information that your body is sharing with you.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a mindfulness-focused therapy that allows you to look at your body and acknowledge the emotions that it is holding. In gaining mindfulness around your body, you can better acknowledge the processes that are occurring during emotionally charged experiences. This form of therapy allows you to process events that have left an impact without reliving the event or having to share all of the details of the event.

Talking about this kind of event can be very difficult and often re-traumatizing. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a trauma informed therapy that uses grounding and mindfulness to empower you to acknowledge your body and it's experiences.  Safety can exist in being present with yourself and observing your experiences through your emotions, body sensations, and thoughts.
