By: Brittany Wingfield, Nurtured Hearts Counseling, PLLCMany women have been coming forward in Hollywood regarding the Harassment, Abuse, and Sexual Misconduct that they have experienced. The Golden Globes last night was a huge event for speaking out against these crimes! Many actresses organized an initiative at this event to bring everyone together and fight against sexual misconduct across the country. They all wore black and many of them wore pins that exclaimed “Times Up” to support those who have experienced Sexual Misconduct. While they recognize that this is happening within their industry, they also recognize that it is a world wide issue. Watching many of these people use their platform for awareness was pretty inspiring! I had goosebumps many times throughout the show! Now I will be honest with you, I do not usually watch these awards shows, but I happened to turn my tv on last night to that channel and it was so encouraging to see this level of awareness being raised through a show that had the attention of so many people. I did not regret watching it! This is a subject that cannot have TOO much awareness. It is a taboo subject that we are really starting to bring into the light, because it just cannot be kept secret anymore, it is seeping out. These women are speaking up about what they experienced and this is no small feat for them. The incredible bravery of these women is changing our world! Oprah was the first black women to receive the Cecil B. Demille award which recognizes those who made outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. Her speech was so impactful, even just re-watching it today gave me goosebumps! Let’s be honest though, Oprah is pretty inspiring. She has experienced her own trials in life and has found a way to use her platform in a way that will never be forgotten. Below are some highlights for you, but I would encourage you to go check it out! “What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. I am especially proud and inspired by all of the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories." “For too long women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men, but their time is up. Their time is UP!" "I have interviewed and portrayed people who have withstood some of the ugliest things life can throw at you. But the one quality all of them seem to share is to maintain hope for a brighter morning even during our darkest nights. So I want all of the girls watching here to know that a new day is on the horizon and when that new day finally dawns it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders that take us to the time when nobody has to say me too again." WOW, just WOW!!! Can you imagine such a time? When women and men never have to say, “me too”. How can you help contribute to the awareness that is necessary around Sexual Abuse, Sexual Harassment, and Sexual Misconduct? If you are a woman or man who has never come forward, know that I believe you and I support you. Know that you sharing your experience is on YOUR time. If you have come forward, you are recognized. You are SO brave and your voice HAS BEEN HEARD! P.S. Also, if you have not seen the “He said, She said” commercial, see it here on my Facebook Page! Another very powerful message against sexual abuse.
